Mr. joe fuqua

eagle lifetime achievement award

ABC North Alabama

HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA

DECEMBER 2018

On December 6, 2018, Joe was honored with receiving the Associated Builders and Contractors of North Alabama's Lifetime Achievement Award. Here was his nomination submission written by Bart Bankowski:

In 1982, Joe Fuqua decided to strike out on his own as an architect, leaving behind the opportunity to partner within an established firm. His convictions regarding how he wanted to conduct business and serve his clients were rewarded within a few hours of "going solo." Two design opportunities presented themselves on that very day and became the first steps in a 35 year odyssey within the architectural design and construction arenas.

Joe founded what would eventually evolve into Fuqua & Partners Architects, a "design oriented service firm" that prides itself on assisting clients in the best manner possible while providing a comfortable, yet rewarding, work place for employees.

Joe's particular area of interest has always been within church ministry. As a youngster at Whitesburg Baptist Church, Joe observed the need for constant planning and forethought in regards to church growth and expansion. Once combined with his love of architecture and formal training, church design became a prime focus of Joe's work through the years. From the "mega worship center" phase of the 80s and 90s to the big box phase of the early 2000s and into the adaptive re-use and projection/multiple venue phase that we are currently experiencing, Joe has seen it all.

The hundreds of late night planning meetings, driving home from all points in the Southeast, exemplify his passion for helping church committees find the way to best serve their ministries. As we move out of the economic downturn that has plagued most of the US for the last few years, church ministry has changed - and so has Joe Fuqua.

A greater abundance of civic and government projects have presented themselves and have afforded Joe the chance to assist clients and patrons in different ways than ever before. His addition to the Huntsville Museum of Art, the design of the Cook Museum of Natural Science, and the new Radiance Technologies office building are no doubt at the top of his resume.

Joe's passion for assisting others extends well beyond North Alabama and into South America where he has assisted his son in the creation of a boys' orphanage in the jungles of Peru. "Not Forgotten" is a family-style orphanage that provides a safe, stable existence, quality education, and spiritual and psychological guidance for disconnected youth. These young men are encouraged to affect change and positively impact their communities throughout their lives. Joe is currently assisting "Not Forgotten" in the creation of an urban transitional home which will assist the young men in moving away from the orphanage and becoming valuable members of society.

Joe and his wife Glynis have three children and three grandchildren. He is a past member of the board of directors of ABC North Alabama. He is also a member of the American Institute of Architects, National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, North Alabama Chapter of AIA, and Neighborhood Concepts.
